Toy & Tech day

Just a quick notice - this Thursday, we're having a special day to reward all the amazing behaviour and hard work we've put in over the term. We are having a "toy & tech" day. This means that the children can bring in one or two things to play with. We will have some rules to ensure everything safe. Please give me an email if you have any questions.

Three little pigs - a different perspective....

It's been far too long since I've updated our class blog and I've had requests from the children that this video goes up online. We've been looking at fairytales in class this term. We've studied characters, setttings and plots. We've also written our mixed up fairytales (these are in the class in booklets - please come and have a look!). Our next step is to tell a fairytale from a different perspective; here's a video we used to start off our discussion:

* This video does has some difficult concepts to comprehend - we didn't go into many of them. Instead we talked indepth about the Big Bad Wolf not being so bad after all. We also read "The true story of the three little pigs" which gives a similar changed perspective story.

Athletics Day

On Tuesday we had our athletics day. We all had lots of fun participating in the different activities. We competed in sprints, long jump, high jump, tug-of-war, sack races and relays. It was lots of fun but really windy. Here's a quick reflection from Amara and Connor (the rest can be found in our Korero Books).

Fractions

This week we're finishing fractions in maths.

We'll be making sure that we can all....

- identify fractions
- order fractions
- find fractions of shapes (and some numbers)

Some of us might be able to....

- identify equivalent fractions
- add or subtraction fractions
- convert improper fractions

Have a go at these games to help you practice

Have a watch of this video to help you

This week in Te Reo

We are really lucky in Room 17. Each week, Whaea Adrienne comes into our classroom and spends time teaching us Te Reo.

This week we focused on place names.

Here's a link to a quiz from today that Mr Mcintosh created. You'll need to copy and paste the class code into the box. The code is 124788

Assembly Movie

Here's our movie we shared at our latest assembly - it very quickly details a few of things we've been learning.

Oktapodi

A little while ago we watch a really cool short film called 'Oktapodi'. We talked about how exciting the film was and decided to retell the story. We tried to use lots of descriptive language to keep our audience interested. You can check out the video and our stories below:

Search Engines for Kids

Here are a few search engines that we use in class. They are designed for kids so sometimes they gives us slightly better results than google. Check them out!

Maths Week - Top 100 Books

This week is maths week at KNS. Each day we have a different picture that we use to stimulate discussion. We've taken our first "picture" home so that we can discuss it at home as well. Take a look and see how you compare to your child - leave a comment below if you like as well!

* This was found on TES and isn't our list - please let me know if the link doesn't work.

Question: Olympics

This week we've begun our new Inquiry topic. I've named it "The Olympics and Me" because although we'll be looking at the olympics, we'll also be looking inwards as well. We'll be looking at what it means to be from Karori, from Wellington and New Zealand. Towards the end, we'll be comparing some of the traditions, symbols and other important aspects of our culture to another country.

First though...we know a bit about the Olympic games. But there are some other "games" that are countries take part in. Do you know what they are? Who are they for? Why are they important?

EDIT:

Well done Miles! Miles told us that there is a Paralympics, Special Olympics, Winter Olympics, Student Games, Masters Games.

There is one more "games" that Mr Mcintosh knows about...can you find it?

We also watched a video called "Yes I can - Superhumans". We only managed a quick discussion on it today - but it would be great if you could continue this at home. What amazing feats are these athletes completing? Why is it important to have a paralympics too?

Te Reo Maori

Every week (or fortnight) we'll be focusing on a new Te Reo goal. Our first goal is to make sure everybody in Room 17 (including the adults) can count up to twenty. I've linked a quick game that can help us do this.

I've also included a quick image from the NZ maths website that can help remind you. If you're stuck, then have a quick google search - there is plenty of pictures and activities to help you learn.

Bake Sale!

We were really lucky today! Some of the Year 7/8 classes put on a bake sale for us. There was loads of yummy food. It also a great lesson for us in budgeting our money.

Afterwards we had a big chat about who we were raising money for. We talked about what a refugee was and how hard it must to have to leave your home.

Dream House

We're still looking at measurement at the moment and this week we begun designing our dream house.

We created a floor plan using squares and rectangles. We were only allowed to use these shapes as these were easy for us to calculate the perimeter and area later.

We labeled and coloured them in. Next we replicated our plan using numicon. After this we calculated the perimeter and area. This was slightly more difficult as some of our rooms were really big. We also weren't allowed to count each individual square - we had to either add or use our multiplication skills (Mr Mcintosh was really happy & surprised with how many of us could use multiplication to calculate area).

Here's a couple of finished ones below:

Leo's Dream House
