Musical Instruments

Next week we'll be creating musical instruments in class. We've spent the last couple of weeks looking at how sound is created and how it travels. We've also begun designing our instruments to create next week.

Most of us will need to bring some things from home to use when creating our instruments. We'll be taking home our designs to discuss with you (our parents) to make sure we have everything our design needs. If we don't, we might need you to help us think of something similar we can use instead OR help us change our design.

Don't worry if things don't work out as planned - there is lots of learning involved around the process.

*Mr McIntosh can supply some everyday items such as string, glue, paint etc.

How to make a yummy Raclette?? By Leah in Switzerland

1. You need an electric table top grill with small pans and place it on the table.
2. Ingredients:
A. Raclette cheese, sliced
B. Pickled onions
C. Gherkins
D. Salami, in small slices
E. Sliced tomatoes
F. Cooked potatoes

How to do it??:
1. Heat up the electric table top grill.
2. Now you can make your own Raclette by putting the ingredients into the small pans but always put one slice of Raclette cheese on top.
3. The Raclette is ready when the cheese on top if melted and slightly brown.
4. Now you can eat it with cooked potatoes.

It is really yummy and a tradional recipe in Switzerland

Have fun making a Raclette, by LEAH

Big Hello from Leah

Hi dear room 17!!!
how are you all??
I am in Switzerland since two days and the little village is called Lenzerheide.
There is 2m snow here.....I will post you some photos.....
On Sunday in the morning it was really sunny outside.
We went on the sledge and slit down the hill-super fast on the snow!
it was really icy on the snow.
Then me and my brother Louis went to get our first skischool lesson.
In the early morning we picked up all our ski gear from the shop and my ski shoes are green just like my trousers and my jacket. And I look really green.
I also wear a helmet.
My ski teacher is called Stephanie and is very cool an nice.
My group went on the ski elevator to go up the hill again. Then we slid down the snow down the hill.
We had to bent our knees and put the hands on the knees.
After ski school I went swimming with my family. Then we had a nice warm shower and then we went home and watched a German movie. After watching movie we ate dinner with my grandparents.

I have travelled to three countries so far:
1. Japan (Tokyo)
2. Germany (MΓΌnchen, MΓΌnster, Lohne, Ulm)
3. Switzerland ( Lenzerheide)

It was soooo fun!!
I have met heaps of my German family and also made some new friends, too.
And I like speaking German.
My grandmother does lots of yummy cooking for me and all of us.

I am going to bed now.
Have a great day at school.

Music Inquiry

During our inquiry we'll listening and watching lots of different music. We'll be discussing how it makes us feel, what instruments are being used, and a bit about the science behind sound.

Throughout the inquiry, we'll be listening to important or interesting pieces of music. I'll be showing different pieces through the inquiry but I'd love your input too! Do you have anything that you or your family likes to listen to? Do you know any strange or interesting piece of music that you could share? Find it in youtube and paste it into the padlet below.

Art - Hundertwasser

Friedensreich Hundertwasser believed that nature and beauty was the key to happiness.
He loved nature and used natural themes in his artwork. Hundertwasser often used spirals in his artwork.  The spiral is a symbol of life and nature.

We created pieces of art based upon Hundertwasser's ideas and artwork. We used thick black lines and pictures of nature. Here are some finished ones.

The others are outside and inside Room 17.

There are six altogether. See if you can find them before this puzzles goes up on Monday morning.

It is made by google.

New Inquiry

We are starting our new inquiry this week and are beginning to look at Music & Technology. The concept we are teaching is systems.

To start off we've looked at a video from a group called Landfill Harmonic. It looks at a group from South America who love to play music but don't have a lot of money. They were able to build instruments from rubbish. We found it amazing what they made their instruments from.

Hei Tama, Tu Tama

We've learnt this really fun game at Kapa Haka called "Hei Tama, Tu Tama". The instructions can be found in the video below. Make sure you have a go at home!

Pause and think online

This is video of the song we sung at the assembly on Thursday. It talks about staying safe online and using our head, hands, heart and gut to stay safe. It's been a great way to learn about digital citizenship.

This video was made by common sense media. You can find similar videos and resources by going to their website here

Congratulations Leo!

Leo has made to our 100 club. That means he's answered 100 basic facts in 6 minutes. It also means that Leo knows these facts and isn't having to work them out.

Well done Leo!

To get faster he recommended to do "lots of practice" and "do a bit at home as well"

If you'd like to do a bit more practice then check out the maths games on our blog, remember to do your homework and ask your parents/Mr Mcintosh for other ideas about how to practice.

Today's Assembly - George's Marvellous Medicine

Today we had a Team Assembly. We shared our George's Marvellous medicine writing and art. George’s Marvellous Medicine is a book we have read in class. It’s about a boy with a horrible Grandmother. To get revenge, George cooks up a marvellous medicine. We decided to make our own medicines (even though we all have really nice Grandparents). Some people shared their writing today at assembly  - Well done Nestor, Isabelle and Sydney!

When writing instructions, we made sure that we had a hook (a sentence to engage the reader), a title, ingredients and steps. Here's a few up close. The rest will be put up outside our classroom - We would love it if you came and read them.

Certificates

Congratulations Jacob, Alex, Mackenzie and Dylan! You've all shown the Karori Normal School values and received a Principals Award. Keep up the good work!
