Fractions & Music

This is a slightly different game which deals with fractions. It uses fractions and music. The bars down the bottom represent different fractions / musical notes. Place the fractions along the musical line and press play.

What do you notice about the different sounds?

Can you put different fractions on top of each other? What happens when you try?

My Trip To Sydney - by Robbie Fear

I stayed  with my Grandparents for 3 weeks. Four of my cousins came over for a week to play.

We went to an all-you-can-eat buffet, and I liked the chocolate fondue fountain best :-)

This is me ice-skating for the third time.

We went camping, kayaking and canoeing. It rained at night and we tried to tell jokes and ghost stories in the tent, but they weren't funny or scary.

We had a skipping competition at a picnic. I made 14 jumps in a row.

I made a dagger and sword from wood with my Granddad in his garage.
My Grandmother made lots of yummy food. I liked the peach and custard cakes best.

Sons of Gallipoli

Here is the song we sang during our ANZAC day service at KNS. It's a really lovely song that describes the emotions, memory and story of visiting Gallipoli.

More podcasts

Both of these stories are very descriptive. They have chosen interesting vocabulary and sentences to make their stories exciting. Well done!

Alex has written an incredibly descriptive story pretending to be Mr Fox.

Anna has written a story about the enormous crocodile.

Study Ladder

It has taken me a while but I have finally set up studyladder for Room 12. We will be completing some tasks in school but I'd like to encourage you to help your child work through some of the activities at home.

The website is www.studyladder.co.nz

None of the concepts I've set should be new so all the children will be fine completing these independently.

I have printed off their logins and passwords. Please let me know if you haven't received it or would like another one.

For those of you who haven't encountered studyladder before, I have copied the basics from their website which should answer most of your questions.

Dear Parent / Guardian,
This is a courtesy letter to inform you that your child's class is now using a free version of Studyladder, an online educational program which allows students to learn at their own pace.
About Studyladder
Studyladder is a K-6 web based educational program designed by teachers. The program is curriculum based and covers Mathematics, Literacy and 8 other subjects. Your child has been given a username and password which can be used to access Studyladder.
Using Studyladder
It is not compulsory for your child to use Studyladder at home, however regular access will help your child to reinforce what they have learnt in school. It will also help to build their confidence through practice.
Safe Internet usage
Studyladder is designed to prevent bullying and does not allow student access to social networking. Your child will NOT be able to chat with anyone via Studyladder. However, we encourage you to supervise your child at all times when using the Internet.
Recovering previous rewards and points
Students can recover their rewards and points from their previous accounts. To do this, students should log into their NEW school account, click on the HELP TAB and select RECOVER OLD POINTS. All of their past rewards will be recovered. This will also upgrade their new account if the previous account had premium access.
Accessing Studyladder from home
Go to www.studyladder.co.nz and login using your child's school username and password.
Parents have the option to sign up for a free home account which can be linked to their child's school account. Those who register will have access to their child's certificates and results. Studyladder does not charge for this service and it is optional to upgrade to premium access.
If you have any questions or require assistance, please email support@studyladder.co.nz

Homework - Term 2

Last term for homework we were exploring the relationships between numbers. More specifically, we were looking at a concept called reversibility which means we can change the order of an equation and still reach the same answer.

For example: 5 + 4 = 9    &    4 + 5 = 9

This term, we are going to be focusing on speed. I'll be sending home ten questions and the aim is answer them as fast as possible. If you have time, test yourself on some other questions. Use dice, cards, online maths games to help you get faster.

We test ourselves every Friday so it's important we are always practicing.

Although the focus is on speed, you will come across questions that are based upon:

- doubles
- halves
- number bonds to ten, twenty and one hundred
- multiplication and division

ALL the children have learnt basic strategies to solve multiplication now so nobody should find these questions too hard.

We will be continuing to learn spelling words each week too. We will include a mixture of topical words, words from the essential spelling list and also words that contain a particular spelling sound.

Please don't surprised if you see a word that you learnt in Term 1 - I see lots of words that we have already 'learnt' being spelt wrong in our writing.

Good luck!

*** Update - I am very sorry it appears that the spelling lists and some of the maths sheets were not handed out today (along with some of the passwords for the children). I'm not quite sure why some children received theirs and others didn't.

The rest are sitting in the classroom and will be given out tomorrow.

Torty the Tortoise

This video is about a fantastic tortoise who was very lucky. Her name is Torty. She was ran over by a gun carriage. Some of her shell came off and she also lost some of her toes. A man named Stewart saved her and took her back to New Zealand. She is only Veteran to still be alive. She is over 120 years old.

"I hope she has children so her legacy lives on" - Hannah

"It was really cool because they put so much effort and detail into their exhibition" - Arabella

"It was cool how she managed to stay alive" - Caitlin

"She was lucky that Stewart looked after her" - Isabella

"It was interesting that Torty has lived in that house for 99 years" - Peter

"I liked that they made a sculpture of her for the museum" - Hunter

Maths Challenge

Have a go at the challenge below. Don't forget to explain your answer.

ANZAC day service - KNS

We had an ANZAC day ceremony to remember the people who fought and died. We were remembering those who died in World War 1.

First, we planted white crosses with names of brave soldiers. Our soldier was Lance Corporal F A Brill. We will be posting on our blog some more information about him next week.

Next we listened to a song called the Last Post. This was played on a bugle. We also heard the poem Flanders Fields.

We then had a minute of silence - we thought of all those who died for us. Finally we sang a song called Sons of Gallipoli.

Here are some photos of the service.

The Last Post - ANZACs

As part of our reading some of us were reading the book 'Dawn Parade'. In the book, a boy called Leo went to the Dawn Parade. They looked at the names on the memorial and listened a man playing a bugle. He was playing a called 'The Last Post'.

"It made me think of the people who died in the war" - Archie

"It sounded sad" - Pearse

"It was a very sad song. I have heard it before" - Zach

"It made me remember those people who were in the war" - Noa

ANZAC Day

We're going to spend the next couple of weeks looking at Anzac day. This video gives a really good introduction to ANZAC day and why the poppy is an important symbol.

Here are some of our thoughts about the video:

"Poppies were chosen because they were the only flower in the fields" - Athena

"People make paper poppies to raise money for Veterans" - Alex

"Paper poppies are different shapes in different countries" - Arabella

"You can find and buy poppies all around Wellington" - Jack

"All poppies are the same colour but look slightly different depending on which country you're in" -Zach

"There is a big factory in Scotland that makes lots of poppies in each year" - Charlie

Something a bit different

I've decided to post something a bit different up this week. Below are four different websites that you might want to visit. They are all easy to use and might provide something different for you to do over the last few days of the holidays.

This is a 'game' and is all about colour perception. Click on the colour that is slightly different to the others - be careful though, it gets hard really quickly! I managed to get 24 points - how many can you get?

I noticed throughout the term that lots of children were taking books from the library that explained how things worked. This website does the same - except there are some small animations that help you. There's everything from jet planes to spiders.

Travel round the world (or pick a blank slate) and build with lego, but online. These involve 3D shapes - can you name any of them?

Storybird lets you create your very own story book. It has brilliant illustrations that you can use. It's free and something we might use as a class later on in the year.

Podcasts - Round 2

It's been a while since I updated our blog - too long I think!

This week I have some fantastic responses to Fred and Leo's letters to the Mayor. Mollie and Caitlin have both responded as the Twits.

Keep checking back this week - I'll be posting the rest of the podcast that we managed to upload before the break.

Friday 3 April 2015

Swimming

Next term we are swimming!

This is really exciting but also involves being really organised and remembering when our swimming days are.

We only ever swim on a Monday, a Wednesday or a Friday.

I'll remind the children throughout the week which exact dates we are swimming, however if you'd like to know or like a printed copy for yourself then click on the link below.

Holidays

Wow - the term has ended already! Those nine weeks went incredibly quickly. We've learnt loads and had such a great time.

So far this term we've covered things such as...

- Telling the time
- Simple fractions
- Addition and Subtraction strategies
- Adverbs
- Kia Kaha (Who we are + our relationships with others)
- Reading
- Writing recounts
- Writing persuasive letters
- Loads of Art

If you'd like something to do over the Holidays, you could...

- Write a recount about something you did or somewhere you went.
- Head on over to our maths page and play some of the maths games.
- Go to this website and practice your basic facts (the same ones as the test we do).
- Listen to one of our podcasts and comment below or on the wall.
- Write a story to record as podcast for when you get back to school.
- Invent a game, write the rules down and share it with the class when you get back.
- Help Mum & Dad with cleaning the house, car or garden.

I'd like to say how impressed I am with all the children in Room 12. They are incredibly clever, creative and well behaved. All the children have improved a great deal and will continue to do so - keep it up Room 12!

Enjoy your holidays - stay safe and have fun!

Mr McIntosh

Podcasts

After a lot of struggle we have finally found a simple way to record and upload our podcasts. For those who don't know what a podcast is...

A podcast is simply a piece of recorded audio uploaded to the internet. Often a picture is used to accompany the audio.

In Room 12 we use podcasts to share our work with a wider audience. At the moment we've just focused on getting our podcasts recorded and uploaded to the internet. Next time, we'll focus more on our expression and recording in a clear voice.

For this set of podcasts the children have all chosen different pieces writing they enjoyed or are proud of. Fred and Leo have both written letters pretending they live next to the twits - and they want them gone!

Have a listen to their persuasive letters which explain why the Twits should be kicked out of Wellington.

Time for some more comments

Teachers of the week - Episode 2

Here is our second episode of 'Room 12 Teachers of the week'.

This weeks strategy is all about the = sign. The children have learnt what it means and also how to balance sums on each side.
