Oktapodi writing

Earlier in the term we were focusing on writing descriptively. We tried to use a variety of words and phrases to gain interest from our audience.

Because we were focusing on descriptive writing, we decided to retell a story. We used the short animated film 'Oktapodi' as inspiration. You can watch the film below.

I'm very proud of what the children came up with. They have been very descriptive and creative in their choice of words and phrases. We would love for you to read them!

Our stories can be viewed by clicking on this link here: Room 12 Oktapodi Stories

OR

They have been printed and put on the wall in Room 12.

Maths Challenge

Today during self-guided learning some of us had a go at a maths challenge. I've copied it here so you can have a go at home. Use a bit of paper to help you. Good luck and don't give up!

Frances and Rishi were given a bag of lollies.

They shared them out evenly and had one left over.
Just as they had finished sharing them their friends Kishan, Hayley and Paul came along. They wanted some lollies too so the children shared them out again between all of them. This time they had two lollies left over.

How many lollies could there have been in the bag?

*Make sure both parts of the question are correct.

For experts: what if everybody had more than one lollie each?

Use the padlet below to explain your answer.

This maths challenge was taken from Nrich maths website.

Swimming Sports

Congratulations to all those who took part in our swimming sports yesterday. It was a fantastic day and I was particularly impressed to the values of perseverance and excellence being shown!

The results from all the competitive races have been sent out via school links.

First Aid - Te Reo

Today we were very lucky. We had a very special visitor who came in and taught us the maori words for some of the words that we've learnt about and are using within our inquiry unit.

Can you match these words up with the pictures?

tēpa                         tio                        tīpae whawhati tata                    tākai                kutikuti

                karapū kirihou

Kei whea te _________? Where is the ________?

Tikina te ___________. Get the ___________.

First Aid

Today we had a special visitor. Louise from the New Zealand Red Cross came to teach us all about First Aid.

We learnt:
  • What to do when we come across somebody that needs help.
  • How to help a child or an adult if they are choking.
  • What to do with a burn.
  • How to handle cuts.

Lets see what can you remember...

What do these stand for?

Match sticks (Problem solving)

This is mathematics problem solving activity. Follow the instructions and figure out the next sequence.

This might be a bit difficult so would be a really good activity to complete with your parents or an older brother/sister.

Good luck and let Mr Mcintosh know how you get on!

When we need help - explaining through gifs

This afternoon, as a part of our inquiry, we used GIFs to explain and show our understanding of "times where we would need help from emergency services". To show our understanding we created GIFs. GIFs are like short movies. They are created through the use of lots of pictures.

We worked in groups and came up with scenes that showed we knew when we needed help from emergency services.

See if you can guess what's happening that needs the attention of emergency services (and who made it!)

*Some of us had difficulties (technical or how fast we worked) so there are a few missing.

Inquiry + Google docs

Last week we worked on our inquiry topic - Emergency Services. Our focus is the concept of technology and change. Lately, we have been looking the fire service.

In small groups, we brainstormed questions on pieces of paper. We searched the internet and tried to find the answer to our questions. After we found the answer, we created a slideshows on google docs to present our answers. We also tried to find pictures that went with our questions.

Here is what we came up with:

Thursday 4 June 2015

Inquiry / Google docs / Slideshows

What an afternoon we have had!

Today we...

-  Asked questions related to our inquiry topic (technology & change).
-  Created slideshows.
-  Researched answers using google.
-  Inserted pictures.
-  Worked collaboratively to achieve this.
-  Used our problem solving skills.

I will link the slideshows we made tomorrow to the blog.

Children's Blogs

Isabella has made her very own blog. She has put pictures of animals on her blog and has said she is going to include poems and facts about animals. Well done Isabella!

You can find her blog at by clicking on this link

Some of the children have expressed an interest in creating their own blogs too. If you would like set up your own blog, you'll need:

- An gmail address (or you can use Room 12's one)
- A parent or adult helper

It's very easy and we did go over it briefly in class. The website to use is:

www.blogger.com

Please note; this is entirely optional.

Also, if your child wants to create their own blog please talk to them about:

- Internet safety
- How to safely search for images
- What they will be posting on their blog

I have mentioned to the children I am happy to link their blogs to our class one if it includes a learning element.  For example, somebody might want to post a picture of some baking they did in the weekend and write the recipe.

Personification

Personification is where we give human attributes (things that only people can do or are) to things that aren't living or human.

Here are our some of our examples:

Lucy - The light whispered to me as I walked in the park of darkness

Sophie - The sun smiled at me as it travelled across the blue sky

Ollie - The flames ate the houses

Pearse - The flames danced from house to house wildly.

Fred - The fire hopped house to house.

Caitlin - The sun winked at me in the dazzling light.

Archie - The fire swallowed houses as it went along.

Leo - The rocket punched through the air like a boxer.

Hayden - The security cameras stalked me as I ran past like the wind.

Alex - The snow drifted across the sky like a river of ice.

Chloe - The snowy frost hugged my car.

Jack - The ambulance sang to me as I was walking.

Fred - The storm clapped as loud as a drum.

Molly - The stars winked at me as I walked by.

CC - The waves chased me as I surfed.

Charlie - The wind pulled the umbrella from my hand.

Arabella - The sea wandered around me as I swam in the sea.

Hannah - The wind whispered to me as I walked by.

Athena - The birds sang as loud as an opera singer.

Anna - The leaf fluttered like a fairy while it sky dived down to the earth.

Zach - The fire hopped from house to house.

Robbie - The quicksand hugged me as it pulled me in.

Isabella - The sun danced like a ballerina as I looked up at it.

Henry - The popcorn walked along the floor.

Peter - The tree waved to me as I walked past.

Millie - The sand threw itself across the beach.

Hunter - The wind whispered to me as I skipped by.

Quadblogging - our connected schools #1

We are connected with three other classes around New Zealand. Some of the children in Room 12 wanted to look at their blogs at home. This week we have been looking and commenting on a school in Greymouth. Their blog can be found at:
