Singing awards
Here are our singing award winners from the last two weeks. The children receive these awards because they are participating, being enthusiastic, and being a role model for others during our singing time each week. Well done!
Here are some reminders for next week...
All the spelling notebooks will need to be back as we'll be copying in our new words for the week. We'll use a sheet this week so it should be slightly clearer which words we are learning. We'll also use a sheet for our maths which should make this clearer too.
All forms and letters (Capital E) need to be back now. If you've lost yours, just let Mr Mcintosh know and he'll get you a new one.
Tuesday
Library books need to be back today.
Wednesday
Thursday
Friday
Singing and kapa haka.
Basic facts and spelling tests.
Keep checking our blog throughout the week - we'll be updating it throughout the week with some of the things we've been up to :)

Telling the time
We've spent the week learning to tell the time using analogue clocks. Using these clocks can difficult as there is so much to look at and figure out.
To make sure we've learnt everything - here some websites the children can use to remind them of what they know...

Just match the written times up with clocks by clicking and dragging the icon. See how fast you can match them up!

This game is slightly harder. Help the children fix the clocks by answering the questions. Make sure you start at the easiest level - this game can get really hard!
Spelling homework
What's it all about?
Spelling homework is written in every Monday. We test each other every Friday.
There are ten words learnt each week. Five of these words come from the essential spelling list. The essential spelling list is made up from the words most commonly used in our writing. A copy of those lists (incase you're interested) can be found here:
http://www.kns.school.nz/files/1ac8051de911005f/folders/3/Essential_Word_Lists.pdf
The other five words come from our sound of the week. Each week we'll have a different sound (or spelling pattern that makes a particular sound).
Later in the year we will start to learn words that are specific to the topic we're learning about.
Please don't worry if the spelling words seem too easy - the children will learn more difficult words during the year (up to a point - we won't be learning to spell words that the children would never use in their writing as these are likely to be forgotten just as quickly as they were learnt!).
If you'd like some fun ways to help your children learn their words check out the link below

Recipe for a class
Throughout last week we had been talking about what makes a good classroom. We decided to make a recipe for an excellent classroom. The ingredients were things we decided were essential for a excellent classroom.
Ingredients
27 friends
1 teacher
5 cups of empathy
1 1/2 cups of fun
6 tablespoons of respect
2 heaped tablespoons of manners
8 grams of excellence
2 drops of responsibility
Method
Mix in half the empathy and excellence into a large mixing bowl. Whip them together into a tasty sauce.
Grate the responsibility into a cup and add the chopped empathy.
Cook the teacher in a large pan until boiled. Sprinkle the empathy and excellence until mixed in properly.
Add the manners and cook until golden brown.
Pour the children into the pan and continue to cook at a low heat. Add the cups of fun when the mixture is smooth.
Serve on a large plate. Garnish with respect.
Group of the week
Our group of the week last week was "The incredibles". During the week they showed all the KNS values; respect, responsibility, integrity, empathy, excellence. Well done!

Keeping Safe Online
This week we've been talking about internet safety in Room 12.
We've discussed how people can say things on the internet they often wouldn't say in person.
We also talked about how important it is not to give out our personal information and what we do if we are ever uncomfortable when we are on the internet.
The clip below (although it's aimed at the younger members of the school) talks about all these things. Perhaps you could have quick chat with your child and remind them how important it is to stay safe online.

Chinese New Year
Today Lucy came and shared about the Chinese New Year. She wore a beautiful red traditional dress. She told us about how people usually give money in red envelopes. She always taught us about how she turned nine in China. Lucy told us how Chinese New Year is usually in February.
If you'd like to know more about Chinese New Year - you can ask Lucy or have a look at this website

Being a reflective learner
This lesson was about being a reflective learner.
Being reflective means looking back at our work and making improvements.
First we sketched a butterfly. We looked at photograph of a butterfly from the internet and tried our best to draw one in the top corner.
Next we compared our picture with the photograph and tried to see some things we could improve on. This was where we were being reflective.
The next time, we asked our partners and classmates to give us some feedback. They told us things like "make the wings sharper" or "the tail is too long". We listened to their advice and tried again.
Finally, it was time to draw in our last square. This was to be our final copy so we used colour. We talked afterwards about how it is important to be reflective in our learning so we can always be improving. We always talked about teachers and adults can be reflective too.
Circles, colours and patterns
We think that this scenery looks like jellybeans, fireworks, hundreds and thousands, skittles and hypnotisers.
